The Piton Mountains are one of St. Lucia's most distinguished landmarks and recognized as a World Heritage Site. Almost every tourist brochure, postcard or souvenir T-shirt of St. Lucia features a picture of the Pitons. Hiking to the top of the Gros Piton, a 2619 foot (798 m) volcanic plug, offers one an exhilarating hiking experience like no other.
The first half of this 4-mile (approx) and 4-hour hike is along a moderate trail that weaves along the mountain with a gradual incline offering magnificent views all around. At the 1/4 point, you will have a panoramic view of the secluded bay and village of Anse L'Ivrogne and maybe even the island of St. Vincent, only 21 miles away. As you hike, look for the colourful local tropical birds, such as the St. Lucian Oriole or Wren, the Black Finch and the Red Neck Pigeon. The second half of the climb becomes more challenging with steeper ascents over rocks, boulders and root-formed stairs. At the peak, you will be awe at the panoramic and breathtaking views of the island.
This hike will be most enjoyed by those who are in good condition and have hiking experience over uneven and rocky trails.
